IASMiRT – International Association for Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology – is a non-profit organisation established to facilitate bi-annual international SMiRT conferences related to developing the art and science of nuclear technology analysis, design and operation.

Overview

The SMiRT conferences originated in 1971 in Berlin and have been held every two years since then. Subsequent to the initial few conferences the events are moved between the Americas, Europe and Asia. More details of the conference history can be found under the history tab of this website. Participants, typically around 650 or more, come from all parts of the nuclear analysis and design community including researchers, regulators, related NGOs as well as industry practitioners.

Governance

Governance is detailed in the IASMiRT by-laws detailed elsewhere in this site. Fundamentally IASMiRT comprises a management board of five individuals who have been chairs of previous conferences or are elected chairs of forthcoming conferences, supported by an advisory board of all past conference chairs and a small number of individuals elected on a two-yearly basis. Since 2017 IASMiRT has been incorporated in North Carolina. Since many years previous to that the organisation has benefitted from a close working relationship with North Carolina State University, who host this website and provide much valued support to the activities of the organisation.

Publications

All papers presented at SMiRT conferences are published on this website and are freely available to interested practitioners on the basis that any reference or quotation includes a reference to its origin. Following each conference selected papers are identified and developed for peer review for publishing special editions in selected journals.

Strategic plan

IASMiRT has been functioning effectively and delivering high quality and valuable conferences for over 50 years. Although it has a rich history it is a forward looking organisation and is proud of its ability to adapt to industry changes. In order to garner ideas and capture a rational forward programme our strategic plan has been developed and will be monitored at forthcoming conferences. The current version is published on this website.

How to be involved

Any individual interested in participating in IASMiRT activities is encouraged to attend an appropriate conference and participate! During a typical conference week there are numerous opportunities to interact with the management board and advisory board members for those interested in establishing more involvement with conference activities. Individuals or organisations interested in organising future conferences should contact the current President or any other board member to obtain more information regarding the process.
